By Past Lt. Governor Steve Strachan (updated by Immediate Past President Joan Erica) On 20th May, 1968, approximately three months after its organization on 14th February, (official anniversary date), District Governor, Laurent Girouard presented Allen Stewart, Charter President of the newly formed Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach with the club’s Charter. The venue for the charter presentation was the Gulf Stream Room at the Nassau Beach Hotel, Cable Beach. Kiwanis International’s Theme that year was “Be a Builder -Get Personally Involved”. The Lieutenant Governor of Division 22 was I. E. Brimble. The Club’s name is associated with the first undersea international telegraph cable which was laid between Jupiter, Florida and a section of the fore-shores of New Providence. The beautiful and picturesque beach line in the area where the cable came ashore was soon to be known as Cable Beach from which the Club took its name. The Cable Beach Club was co-sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Nassau and the Kiwanis Club of Fort Montagu. Since its inception, the Cable Beach Club has sponsored the Kiwanis Club of Inagua and the Key Clubs of Saint John’s College, Saint Augustine’s College and C. I. Gibson Senior High. The Club has also co-sponsored the Circle K Club of the College of The Bahamas with two other Clubs of Division 22. The Club co-sponsored the Builders Club of T. G. Glover Primary School with the Circle K Club of the College of The Bahamas on April 18, 1997. The Builders Club of St. Cecelia was chartered February 11, 2003. The Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach admitted female members during the 1996-1997 Administrative year under the presidency of Eugene Palacious. In 2002, the Club inducted Rowena Knowles as the first female president. The club has awarded eight dedicated Kiwanians who have contributed to the growth of Kiwanis with the Mel Osbourne Fellow Award, namely Past Lieutenant Governor Stephen Strachan (charter member), Past President Melford Clarke, Distinguished President Henry Burrows (deceased), Past President Belville Edwards, Merit President Willard Aranha, Diamond Distinguished President James Mackey, Distinguish President Charles Johnson and Vice President Calvin Morley. A few memorable occasions for the Kiwanis Club of Cable included taking the children from Bilney Lane Children’s Home to Disney World in Orlando, Florida; taking the children from the Elizabeth Estates Children’s Home and the Ranfurly Home for Children to the beach. Each year the members look forward to fellow-shipping with the residents from the Geriatric Hospital Ward of the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre and the Persis Rodgers Home for the Aged. Kiwanis Club of Cable Beach sponsors a Scholarship at the College of The Bahamas in the name of the Giles Wells Memorial Scholarship which funds are attained from the annual Bike-a-Thon. For more than ten years the Club was known for its premier equestrian event of the season by hosting an Annual Horse Show at Camperdown, Nassau Bahamas. This event was complimented by and later replaced with the Annual Antique Car Show and Steak Out as the Club’s major fundraiser. However, this year, will see the resurrection of this project in May.
